Trigger Points: Furthering Our Understanding

As bodywork practitioners in Sacramento, we frequently explain trigger points to our clients. But what is actually taking place inside the muscle tissue on a microscopic level when a trigger point develops?
The Physiology of a Contraction Knot
At the cellular level, individual muscle fibers are made of repeating units called sarcomeres. When you move, sarcomeres contract and relax. A trigger point occurs when a group of sarcomeres becomes stuck in a permanent state of contraction — unable to release.
This continuous contraction pinches off blood capillaries feeding that exact spot, leading to local ischemia (lack of blood flow). Without fresh oxygen and nutrients, metabolic wastes like lactic acid and inflammatory chemicals build up, creating a chemical environment that sensitizes local nerve endings.
The Local Twitch Response
One of the defining clinical signs of an active trigger point is the local twitch response (LTR). When sustained, precise pressure is applied directly to the center of a trigger point, the taut muscle band briefly twitches.
This involuntary reflex is actually a sign of resetting: it disrupts the abnormal chemical feedback loop, flushes out accumulated metabolic waste, and signals the brain to allow the muscle fibers to elongate.
Why Foam Rolling Doesn't Always Fix It
Foam rollers and massage guns are great tools for general circulation, but they often lack the specificity needed to deactivate deep trigger points. Broadband pressure flattens muscle tissue, but a deep trigger point requires angled, sustained pressure directly into the contraction knot.
That’s why hands-on clinical therapy with trained specialists who understand functional anatomy produces far more lasting results than home rollers alone.
Living Without Chronic Tension
When trigger points are systematically located and released, blood flow returns, nerve sensitivity drops, and muscles resume their normal length-tension relationship.
If you've been living with tightness that won't go away, scheduling a dedicated trigger point session can be the breakthrough your body needs.
